Shoulder Injuries

From rotator cuff tears to dislocations

The shoulder is one of the most mobile and complex joints in the body, making it vulnerable to a wide range of injuries in sport and daily life.

Common Conditions

  • Rotator cuff tears (acute and chronic)
  • Shoulder dislocations and instability
  • AC joint injuries and separations
  • Labral tears (SLAP lesions)
  • Impingement syndrome
  • Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis)
  • Tendinopathy and bursitis

My Approach

Comprehensive assessment including detailed examination, imaging review, and diagnosis. Treatment options range from conservative rehabilitation to injection therapy and surgical referral when appropriate.

When to Seek Care: If you experience shoulder pain with overhead activities, loss of range of motion, weakness, clicking, or inability to sleep on your shoulder, specialist assessment can identify the underlying cause and guide treatment.

Concussion

Expert assessment and safe return to play

Concussion is a complex brain injury that requires specialist management to ensure safe recovery and return to activity.

Services Offered

  • Acute concussion assessment and diagnosis
  • Baseline screening for contact sport athletes
  • Individualized recovery planning
  • Return to learn protocols
  • Return to sport clearance

Overuse & Bone Stress

Stress fractures, shin splints & load-related conditions

Overuse injuries develop when training load exceeds the body's capacity to recover. They are common across all sports and activity levels, not just running.

Common Conditions

  • Stress fractures (tibia, metatarsal, femur, navicular)
  • Bone stress injuries
  • Shin splints (medial tibial stress syndrome)
  • ITB syndrome
  • Patellofemoral pain
  • Compartment syndrome
  • Achilles and patellar tendinopathy

Understanding Overuse Injuries

Management focuses on identifying contributing factors - training errors, biomechanics, bone health, and energy availability - and addressing each one systematically.

Recurrent stress fractures? Multiple bone stress injuries may indicate an underlying issue with bone health, energy availability, or hormonal function that requires thorough investigation.

Tendon Injuries

Tendinopathy and overuse conditions

Tendon injuries are common in both athletes and active individuals, often resulting from overuse, training errors, or biomechanical factors.

Common Tendinopathies

  • Achilles tendinopathy
  • Patellar tendinopathy (jumper's knee)
  • Rotator cuff tendinopathy
  • Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis)
  • Golfer's elbow (medial epicondylitis)
  • Gluteal tendinopathy
  • Hamstring tendinopathy

Treatment Approach

Evidence-based management combining load management, progressive exercise prescription, and advanced therapies including shockwave therapy and injection therapies when appropriate.

Why Tendons Need Specialist Care: Tendons respond differently to treatment than other tissues. Specialist knowledge of tendon pathology and rehabilitation is essential for optimal outcomes.

Muscle Injuries

Strains, tears, and contusions

Muscle injuries are extremely common in sport, ranging from minor strains to complete tears requiring surgery.

Common Muscle Injuries

  • Hamstring strains and tears
  • Quadriceps strains and tears
  • Calf strains and tears
  • Groin strains (adductor injuries)
  • Muscle contusions (cork/dead leg)
  • Chronic muscle tears

Return to Play

Accurate diagnosis using imaging and clinical assessment, followed by structured rehabilitation and criteria-based return to sport protocols to minimize re-injury risk.

Recurrent Injuries: If you're experiencing recurrent muscle strains, specialist assessment can identify underlying risk factors and guide prevention strategies.

When It's More Than an Injury

Medical conditions that present as musculoskeletal pain

Sometimes what feels like a sports injury is actually a sign of something else going on in your body. These conditions can mimic sports injuries but require different investigation and treatment.

Not every sore joint is a sports injury. Part of the role of a Sport & Exercise Medicine Physician is recognising when joint pain, swelling, or stiffness is caused by an underlying medical condition rather than a mechanical injury - and ensuring patients get the right diagnosis and the right specialist care.

Conditions that can present as musculoskeletal pain include:

  • Inflammatory arthropathies - rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, psoriatic arthritis
  • Connective tissue disorders - lupus (SLE), systemic conditions
  • Crystal arthropathies - gout, pseudogout
  • Reactive arthritis and other autoimmune conditions

When an inflammatory or systemic cause is identified, I coordinate referral to rheumatology or the appropriate specialist, ensuring continuity of care and a clear handover.

Red flags to consider: Joint pain or swelling that moves between joints, stiffness that is worse in the morning and improves with movement, pain that doesn't follow a typical injury pattern, or symptoms that haven't responded to standard musculoskeletal treatment.
